The 23^rd century’s equivalent of the Merchant marine of earth in the 1880’s.  Space is a dangerous place, so those who live there can receive military training, in return they are under contract to fight for Earth in times of great need, and to defend Earth’s interests at all times.   For the most part they live their lives traveling from system to system exchanging goods and trading information.

            The Shikoshounin was created early in the 22nd century after several incidents in which cargo vessels were attacked by pirates.  It was formed by a retired military General whose son was killed in one of the attacks.
